A few weeks back I hit the one year mark on deviantArt, and I have to say it’s been a breeze and a blast at the same time. I am currently just shy of 9000 pageviews, just over 25000 views, and a single fave away from 2000 favorites. I’ve received a Daily Deviation:

…and gotten plenty of amazing, thought-out comments and truly appreciated journal/news features. Along the way, I discovered many amazing artists, met some truly interesting people and learned a lot about photography. For all the complaints people have about dA, imagine if it didn’t exist at all, and you’ll discover that all the shortcomings are far outweighed by the advantages.

This celebratory journal wouldn’t be complete without mentioning my generous girlfriend and wonderful model, , who I in part joined dA to impress, and who’s been the most fervent supporter of my work, and my brother who’s given me some stiff competition for the family photographer title, winning a DD himself and generally creating some wonderful images. Seeing as how he’s 11 years my junior, I’m sure his best work is still yet to come.

Thanks to them, and everyone who watched, faved, commented or featured me, I’m still around and still excited about putting up new photographs. Here’s to the next year!

This freshly joined deviant has quickly positioned herself as one of the artist I most look forward to receiving new works from in my inbox. A diverse gallery if there ever was one, ~stlye-lust’s gallery includes some gentle and powerful nudes, pictures of her family which would be controversial if they weren’t so serene and innocent as well as some very strong street photography.

A week ago, Belgrade Comic Con took place (actual name is Belgrade Comics Salon) and along came a few long expected guests. Firstly, I got to meet David Lloyd who, alongside Alan Moore, blew our collective minds roughly 20 years ago with V for Vendetta, and blew mine and two other people’s minds with the shockingly underappreciated Wasteland anthology. Lloyd was surprised to see that a person from Serbia would bring most of the original Wasteland and DC’s V for Vendetta runs, and spent a few minutes just chatting with me about comics and life, before signing some stuff and sketching V in my V TPB, and Evey in my girlfriend’s.

Matt Hollingsworth was also there and came off as an all-round nice guy. Unfortunately, none of the books he colors reached Serbia yet, except for Hellboy which is, in a cruel twist of fate, printed in b&w here, so there wasn’t much for him to sign, though he did put on a wonderful presentation/panel.

Last but not the least, there was Esad Ribic, hot off his Submariner mini. With unending patience, he sketched away most complex pictures, including a hatched-wielding Santa dispatching away Nazi Teletubbies. When I finally got my turn (and if you’ve seen his level of detail, you know he takes a while to get them super amazing), I had an ambitious idea that was deemed a bit too time consuming (Namor and Sue Storm in a Pieta) so Esad was given free reign to do as he pleases so long as it includes Namor (I’m a fan, can’t help it ). What he came up with is this:



For the non-Serbs, the sign reads: “Deer beer, 30 dinars.” The beer in question is a popular local brand of beer, so there it is: a sketch by the current Namor artist of Namor drinking Jelen pivo. Esad is just a phenomenally nice, patient, easygoing guy.

Overall, it was a very exciting weekend for comics’ fans here, since we don’t get too many guest of this caliber around these parts. Hopefully, it’s only a sign of things to come.

In honor of the recent Belgrade Con, this journal is all about the drawings, baby!

This Italian deviant creates image after image of highly detailed pencil cyberpunkish drawings, bringing back the old school feel of European black&white comics.

Since starting these feature journals, I appear to be on the constant (and fairly active) lookout for amazing images to feature. As a result, I noticed some trends emerging.

For one there seems to be an obsession over the square format. As my watchers know, I’m no stranger to squares myself. They are ‘a’ format, one out of many, sometimes appropriate, but sometimes not. My best guess is that the thumbs and images themselves look particularly fetching on dA when in this particular format, while in real life the differences aren’t that great in terms of preference. What is unfortunate is that many rather modest images in this format can reach quite a wide audience, while much richer images in other formats can very easily be underappreciated. Of course, there are masters of the square on dA who produce spectacular images, but there really isn’t too many of them.

Another trend is that of nudes being, overall, a much stronger gallery than most if not all other photographic galleries, save perhaps the street one, even in spite of the dicks who photograph their barely legal girlfriends when the parents are away. I guess people put in a little bit of extra effort when they find somebody willing to disrobe, and, besides, not many people get that opportunity, so maybe a little bit of selection is already made at that point. Then again, most of the amazing photos outside dA are nudes, so there’s that as well.

But perhaps the worst trend is the undervaluing of certain mind-blowing artists out there. There are a number of fashionable photographers on dA, and it sometimes seems that whatever they put up is going to end up with hundreds of faves. No photographer alive strikes pure gold with every single image. On the other side of the medal, there are people who produce outstanding images and get few, if any, faves. My main reason for doing these journals is precisely to spread the word about some of these people, and if you inspect this journal, and the ones that came before it, you’ll find many astounding images that have under 5 faves. From time to time, I’ll come across a gallery and be utterly shocked to find out that a certain deviant’s top deviation has something like 9 faves.

In place of the recent drama, crying, whining and complaining, maybe it would do this place more good to go out, hunt down some great images, maybe have your own art discovered somewhere along the way. Isn’t that the entire point of this website?
